Veni, Vidi, Vici

     Did you know that the month of July was actually named for Julius Caesar? Veni, Vidi, Vici is translated from Latin to mean "I came, I saw, I conquered". Caesar didn't play. Notably one of the most brilliant military strategists ever, Julius Caesar was responsible for destabilizing the status quo government of ancient Rome, centralized in what was then the Roman Republic. After his victorious invasion of Britain via the English Channel and his intrepid crossing of the Rhine River, he expanded Roman territory into both Britain and Gaul (now Germany).  These conquests precipitated Caesar's ebullient rise to power and  allowed Caesar to implement many social and political reforms that still provide prototypes for our current governmental ideologies.  Caesar didn't stop there: he just...

Pearls of Wisdom: A True Story

     Pearls have magical transformative powers: their ability to take an irritant, encase it and convert it into a glistening jewel is a fantastic metaphor. A pearl's creation story is a case in point:  natural pearls form when a microscopic parasite enters a bivalve mollusk and settles inside the shell.  Irritated by the intruder, the mollusk forms a pearl sac of external mantle tissue cells and secretes calcium carbonate and conchiolin to cover the irritant. This secretion process is repeated many times, thus producing the hardened pearl. Natural pearls come in many shapes; round ones are the exception, and are therefore the most rare. Traditionally, pearls are given for graduation, confirmation, nuptials, those big milestone ceremonies, many of which occur in the balmy month of June.  These...

Glowing Castor and Honey Mask ScrubThis scrub and mask in one works wonders on your skin to reveal new skin, decrease spots and scarring, and make your skin plump and moisturized. Your skin will have a radiant glow and softness after this mask. Take a half teaspoon of Castor Oil and half a teaspoon of raw honey and sprinkle in some sugar (crystallized sugar is best for this recipe, but the sugar right out of your cabinet works great). Gently massage onto freshly cleaned, damp skin for about one minute. Allow it to stay on for at least 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and pat dry skin.
